dream.
Memphis Young Woman's Christian Associ, tion president Elida Fri and ·a representattV'e l>f Walters Construction -Co. of
Salem, Ark., will sign a contract Thursday
at the YWCA at 3387 Poplar for the construction of camping facilities near Cherokee, Ark. Also present for the signing ceremony will be representatives of the Jonesboro, Ark., architectural firm, arack{!tt·
Krennerich and Associates, and Mrs.
James Bennett, of whom camp dirctor Bet·
ty Woodard said, "She's the most excited
one of us all. And she's not an old Mirami·
chee camper-'- or even a Memphian."
Mrs. Bennett, a member of the YWCA
board of directors, has been the board's
liaison to the camp committee for the past
year.
The camp is on the south fork of the
Spring River, "next door" to Boy Scout
Camp Kiakima.
Phase 1 building, which will cost about
$100,000, calls for a dining building, bath
house and the septic system. "That probably means we'll tent camp next summer,"
said Mrs. Woodard. "Butif by some miracle
the fund-raisers get the money together
for cabins, we anticipate we could start
building them as late as March and still"te
ready for our summer sessions."
The new camp, nine miles up river from
the old location, will be an expanded version of the Miramichee that has been a
household word to generations of campage Memphians. The old camp had 48
acres;. the new one has 148 acres.
But the terrain of new Miramichee
won't feel all that unfamiliar to the "old
camp girls," whose nostalgia brings them
back for visits, said Mrs. Woodard, an old
camp girl herself. "It's amazing how similar the situation is; the creek that runs
through the camp is almost in the same
place. And the river is almost the same:
White water above that is gentler widens
into a good canoe-teaching situation and
then slows even more to make a safe, lazy
pool for swimmers.
"The inner camp layout will eventually
be a lot like the old camp too," said Mrs.
Woodard. "There are some geographical
memories that we will take pains to re·
create."
But everything will be better, she said.
"For instance, while some of the cabins
will be screened structures as before, oth·
ers will be built so they can be winterized.
We want to be able to use the camp all year
round, instead of just a couple of two- orthree-week summer sessions."

Compers toke o dip in o quiet stretch of the Spring River
A lot of things, however, will have to
wait until later phases because of limited
building funds. Phase 2 calls for building
clusters of cabins, administration and
nurses' building, a cook's cabin and, hope.
fully, a crafts building.
"Then comes the dream," said Mrs. Woodard. "Phase 3 plans include a swimming
pool, tennis courts and stables. "We've
waited a long time to think about this part
of enriching the YWCA camp experience.
Future fund-raising is a big part of the
plan, but now that we have the expanded
acreage, and are making the first step, it
somehow doesn't seem so far away."
The first building phase is being accomplished with a contribution from the Cecil
M. Gooch Trust Fund, money from two
years of fund-raising projects, and funds )
set aside by the board from the sale of the
former YWCA building at 200 Monroe. , ·
