Good evening Scouts and Scou t ers a nd we l come to the Tuesday night
Ki Ki ma Vesper._ Service.
It is important a t this

each Scout and Sco ut e r to rema in si l ent as we observe this
service tonight .
My name is ... . .......... . . - tonight we will be exp loring
matters of importance regarding our journey as Scouts down the
Scouting trail as well as the trail of Life.
We have gathered here tonight to observe the 12th point of the
Scout Law, a Scout is Reverent, and the first part of the Scout
Oath - to do our Duty to God and Country.
As we gather tonight in this, our Mak er ' s House we must pay
particular attention to the blessings of Nature which, crafted by
our Maker, surround us at every turn.
Let us pause and ponder then, some special blessings we have
encountered so far this week. Let us remember:
The cool, trickling waters of om· River as it contirities
eternal journey to the distant oceans

As we are aware of the b lessings tha t surrou nd us tonight atop
t h is magnifi cent crest we must also be mindfu l of t he troubl es
and dangers that await us as we walk the trail o f Life.
ife ' s troubles and dangers are vast and varied, confron ting us
each day as we l ive our lives a mongst our families, friends, and
com munfty.
These troubles a n d dangers can be over-co me by s incerely trusting
in our Maker and s t riving to deve l op an ever closer relationship
with Him . By doing so, we find the s tre ngth and determiration so
vital to us as we face the adversities of this life with strong,
true Fai th and Cour age .
The hi s t ory of ma n -k ind h as always taught a ll peoples to lean on
our Maker for gui d ance and support in ou r journ ey.
Baden-Powell, t he fo under o f S outing, s poke ~t gr at length in
his first book "Scouting for Boys" of t he need for a Scout to
have a basis of s tr engt h and s up port as he under tak es a journey.

Baden-Powell speaks of the basis of strength and support in the
f or m of a Hiking Stave, known in t h Unit ed S t ates as a Hiking
Stick or Hi king Staff.
In his f i rst dra wi ng of a Scout, the fou nder of the Scou t i ng
Movement showed a boy wit h a staf f in his hand.
The hiking sta f f
has long b een a symbol of a journey.
By carrying one wi th you
you wi ll f ind the miles glide by . The staff sw i ngs comfortably
i n your h and, giv i ng balance and rh yt hm to your pace.
Use your staff to push back b ranches and brush , t o flick sticks
and ston es off the trai l , and to poke be hind rocks and in holes.
The staff preceeds you down the trail and is ab l e t o point out
the dangers and pitfalls which l i e ahead.
By trusting i n the
strength a n d support of the staff, you are assured of a sa£er
journey.
However , not h eeding t h e clues offered by your hiking sta ff and
taking your own direction can cause you to stumble and fall.
But, the good n ws is that the hiking staf f is st ill there beside you - r e ady to of fer you the assistance you now need to
pick you rse l f up a nd continue yo ur j our n ey.
If the f al l produced an injury and your journey becomes more
difficult, you can l ean on the hik ing staff and reduce the p ain
as you continue on.
Such is the same for o ur Faith a nd Belief in our Ma k r. He points
the direction f or us in this life if we wil l but pay h eed and
li s t e n .
He knows the p a th and pitfa ll s that lie ahead we ll, poin t ing them
out to us as we continue forward on our journey.
Cl ose attention
to His guidan ce eases the path t h rough Li fe exactly as the
walking staff p r ovides us c lues o f the unknown trail ahead.
When, in this l ife, we do not h eed His guidance we are sure t o
stumble and fa l l . However, we can take grea t joy and comfort in
knowing, l ike the hiking staff, that He is there beside us to
help us regain our footing ant corrtinue our journey-:
Any .arm or
pain that may have come to us i s reduced by l eaning on His
strength as He softens the journey ahead .
Walking staf f s have been wit h us si n ce the dawn of t i me and h ave
b een used by all peoples in every civilization. Such is the case
with our belief in our Supreme Bei n g , our Fat h er, our Lord, o u r
Creator or any ot her nam that we, as humans have associated with
Hirn .

A glance at the varied walking sta ffs presen t here tonight gives
us a c lue of the variety of faiths known around the world.
No
two staffs her e are ident i cal.
Some are ta ll er, some are
thicker, some are straigter, some are hard wood, some are
decorated , some are carved - the varities and details are
limitless .
So t h en are the faiths known by us and all o th er peop les . No
single ind ividua l can determine which walking staff is the best
for all peoples - no more than they can determine which faith i s
the best for all peoples - the varities, differences, strengths
and sty l es of each faith, like the wa l king staff - are so vast.
Only an individual d ecision can suffice in this important matter.
