MORRIS AND TATE HONORED
BY SOUTHEAST REGION
A most unusual distinction was bestowed on the
Chickasaw Council and two of its Council Scouters
when William N. Morris, Jr. and Alvan F. Tate
received the Silver Antelope Award at the first annual
meeting of the newly formed Southeast Region, on
November 3, at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Atlanta.
The Antelope, highest award and Regional honor
given to Scouters, was presented to Scouters Morris
and Tate for their outstanding service to Scouting on
a regional level. Both men served in many capacities
in Region Five, one of the former 12 Scout regions.
The 12 regions were recently realigned to 6 regions.
Both of these outstanding Scouters have been
elected to the Executive Committee of the new
Southeast Region that encompasses 12 states. In
addition, Morris is serving as Area Chairman of
Manpower and Tate as Area Camping Chairman.
It is most unusual for two Scouters from one
council to receive the Silver Antelope Award the
same year and all Chickasaw CQuncil Scouters are
proud of - and salute - these two great Scouters!

Traditionally the holiday season is a
t ime when most of us pause to th ink of, and be wi th,
our relatives and fri ends. At t his time "love thy
neighbor" seems to have a more real meaning than at
any other time of the year.
Ho w wond erful it would be if a bi t of this holiday
spirit would stay wi th everyone throughout the
coming year. . . to expand and grow to include not
only our relatives and friends, but everyone with
whom we come in contact.
Our council officers, professional and office staffs
extend thanks to you for your dedicated efforts on
behalf of th e boys in our council area. May God bless

C·AMP CHEROKEE ADDS
NEW TROOP SITES
Due to the increased interest in the Jambore e style
of camping, plans are now being made to open two
new troop sites at Camp Cheroke e for the summer of
1973.
According to Council Camping Chairman J. C.
Ray, th~ two sites will probably be located across the
lake. Troops camping in these sites will follow. the
same program as Camp Cherokee. They will use the
Jambore e style of cooking and they will also use the
lake at Camp Cheroke e.
According to Ray, the troops using the new sites
might have to share shower and latrine facilities for
next summer , due tc the time factor in having these
sites set up and ready for summer camp operatio n.
However, this should not present a major problem ,
and details can be worked out concerning this
arrangem ent with the troop leadership.
Troops wishing to reserve these new sites or sites
not yet reserved at Kamp Kia Kima may do so by
selecting a site and making a ten dollar reservation
deposit at the Scout Service · Center, 171 So.
Hollywood.

EXPLORING-ON THE MOVE!
Exploring in the Chickasaw Council is, most
certainly, on the move. The program is as exciting
and dynamic as the young adults being served.
Exploring is a program which is in tune with· the
times. It meets the needs, desires and concerns of
today's youth by involving them in professional and
technological fields. Exploring has taken on many
new facets. Emphasis is O!l career explorat ion. Posts
have become co-ed and Explorers ar~ given greater
opportun ities to learn to lead, along with iricreased
responsibilities.
Through the efforts of the Memphis Rotary Club,
many new posts have been formed in Memphis.

1,000 OR BUST!
Our district is stnvmg for a 1,000 boy
membetship by December 31, 1972. This is the first
time t hat the Crittend en District has ever been within
reach of having 1,000 boys registered.
However, to make this become a reality it is
going to take the c.o mbined efforts of1all of our Scout
units. To reach this goal we will need a total of 6
addition al boys from each Cub Pack, Scout Troop,
and Explorer Post before Christmas. So give a boy a
break; get him into Scouting '
DISTRICT LEADERSIDP CHANGES
The Crittend en District would like to express its
sincerest thanks to R. E. "Skip" Wallin, 1972 District
Chairman, and to John Ed Farris, 1972 District
Commissioner. They have put in many hours of effort
to insure a wholesome program for the Scouts and
future Scouts of our district and we are extremely
grateful to them.
Our District leaders for 1973 will be Lindsey
Fairley, District Chairman, and Milton Foley, District
Commissioner. Lindsey is the West Memphis Municipal J udge and Milton is the Director of East Arkansas
Savings and Loan. There are no better men anywhere
to fill the shoes of district chairman and district
commissioner and we are very fortu nate to have their
leadership to make the Crittend en District the very
best that Scouting has to offer.

Traditionally the holiday season is a
time when most of us pause to think of, and be with,
our relatives and friends. At this time "love thy
neighbor" seems to have a more real meaning than at
any other time of the year.
How wonderful it would be if a bit of this holiday
spirit would stay with everyone throughout the
coming year . . . to expand and grow to include not
only our relatives and friends, but everyone with
whom we come in contact.
Our council officers, professional and office staffs
extend thanks to you for your dedicated efforts on
behalf of the boys in our council area. May God bless
you, and stay with you and your family.

C·AMP CHEROKEE ADDS
NEW TROOP SITES
Due to the increased interest in the Jamboree style
of camping, plans are now being made to open two
new troop sites at Camp Cherokee for the summer of
1973.
According to Council Camping Chairman J. C.
Ray, th~ two sites will probably be located across the
lake. Troops camping in these sites will follow. the
same program as Camp Cherokee. They will use the
Jamboree style of cooking and they will also use the
lake at Camp Cherokee.
According to Ray, the troops using the new sites
might have to share shower and latrine facilities for
next summer, due tc the time factor in having these
sites set up and ready for summer camp operation.
However, this should not present a major problem,
and details can be worked out concerning this
arrangement with the troop leadership.

Exploring has taken on many
new facets. Emphasis is O!l career exploration. Posts
have become co-ed and Explorers ar~ given greater
opportunities to learn to lead, along with iricreased

1,000 OR BUST!
Our district is stnvmg for a 1,000 boy
membetship by December 31, 1972. This is the first
time that the Crittenden District has ever been within
reach of having 1,000 boys registered.
However, to make this become a reality it is
going to take the c.ombined efforts of
1
all of our Scout
units. To reach this goal we will need a total of 6
additional boys from each Cub Pack, Scout Troop,
and Explorer Post before Christmas. So give a boy a
break; get him into Scouting'
DISTRICT LEADERSIDP CHANGES
The Crittenden District would like to express its
sincerest thanks to R. E. "Skip" Wallin, 1972 District
Chairman, and to John Ed Farris, 1972 District
Commissioner. They have put in many hours of effort
to insure a wholesome program for the Scouts and
future Scouts of our district and we are extremely
grateful to them.
Our District leaders for 1973 will be Lindsey
Fairley, District Chairman, and Milton Foley, District
Commissioner. Lindsey is the West Memphis Municipal
Judge and Milton is the Director of East Arkansas
Savings and Loan. There are no better men anywhere
to fill the shoes of district chairman and district
commissioner and we are very fortunate to have their
leadership to make the Crittenden District the very
best that Scouting has to offer.

No Longer "Square"
He's a "square." The expression "to be square"
used to indicate personal honesty, integrity, and
kindred virtues. ~However, the meaning of the term
has undergone a transition to where the common
connotation is a person who isn't "with it," one who
is not up to date, ignorant concerning the world
around him ... social customs, etc. The term (used
with the article "a") "to be a square" has all these

are urged to attend EVERY District Committee
Meeting. There is no better way of keeping your

now is the time to represent your Scouting
institution!
FALL ROUND-UP IN THE NORTHEAST DISTRICT

PINEWOOD DERBY
The Pinewood Derby is · probably the most
universally popular and successful father and son
activity in Cub Scouting. Let's help our boys by
coming with them to. this event. And may the best car
win!
PLACE: Larose Elementary School, 851 S. Wellington.
December 2, 10:00 A.M. - 12 Noon.
ROUNDUP EXTRA
All units are urged to check their unit rosters and
make certain that all boys are registered. _Did you
know that for every boy in Scouting there's another
boy who'd like to be, but can't?.Why? Because there
are adults in the neighborhood who think Scouting
isn't worth their time. Let's help our children!
negative meanings, and often the term as it appeared
in the Cub Scout Promise was misinterpreted in this
manner.
In keeping with present-day terminology the Cub
Scout Promise now officially reads as follows:
Cub Scout Promise
1·, • .. . ........ . ... , promise
To do my best to do my duty to God and my country,
To help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack.
