Where Does All The Money Go?
Several of us - a ll active in
Scouting· were having lunch the
other day, a nd we began talking
about what we had don e as
Scouts a nd about the experiences
our sons were having.
"I remember the first ti me I
went to Scout camp," one man

said, "My folks made me earn
half of the camp fee, and wh en
our Scout troop got to camp, it
was the greatest thing I'd ever
done. In fact that's where I
learned to swim.
"But r never realized th at the
camp staff was paid by the

cou ncil." he continued, "and it
was several years later when I
was on the staff that I
understood how much work had
to be done to get camp ready for
surhmer."
A second man said, "I never
went to Scout camp, but the day a

man in Scout uniform came to
our school to see how many boys
wanted to be Scouts, I couldn't
wait for a troop to be organized.
Then, when we had our first
meeting, we had the greatest
Scoutmaster who said if we were
going to be Scouts, we'd be doing
a lot of hiking and camping. In
fact, every summer we'd go
hiking for a week, and, of course,
we took part in camporees a nd
the council's Scouting show. I
learned so much in those daysthings I've been able to use ever
since."
" Well, I was a father with an
8-year-old son when I started in
Scouting," a third man explained. First, I was on the pack
committee, but in a few months I
was asked to be Cubmaster, I
didn' t know much about Cub
Scouting, a nd if it hadn 't been for
the training sessions and the
Cub Scout Leader roundtables
that the council offered, I
probably would never had ma de
it. Every once in a while, there'd
be some question, but I'd call our
pack commissioner or the council
service center a nd get the
answer."
He continued , "My son? We

could see the changes that
Scouting made in his life. I think
he's a better man and father
because of his Scouting
experience. And now I have a
grandson who is a Boy Scout."
Table talk? Of co urse,
Scouters like to talk about
Scouting when they're together.
And it's this devotion to Scouting
t hat makes it possible to have
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and
Explorers.
Behind the scenes for all
three of these men was a local
Scouting council that provided
services to the organizations that
. use the Scouting program, to the
volunteers who administer our
packs, troops, and posts, and for
, boys and young men and women
who benefit from the activities of
Scouting.
To provide those services,
the Chickasaw Co.uncil conducts
a sustaining members hip enrollment each year beca use United
Way provides only 40 percent of
the council operating budget.
Scouting is possible for young
people in our area because our
volunteer adults, parents, and
friends of Scouting become
sustaining members. ·

Scouting Services Describe d To Unit Leaders

''Me et Joe Lon g Nigh t''
Four types of services to
leaders of Cub Scout packs. Boy
Scout troops and Explorer posts
will be described at a series of
meetings during the next month.
Bob Cannon, president of the
Chickasaw Council, will attend
the meetings along with Joe
Long, the new Chickasaw
Council Scout executive. They
also will look for suggestions to
improve the service given by the
Council.
"The job of the Chickasaw
Council is to support our unit
leaders, and we want to discuss
the services we offer," Cannon,
who is President of Buckeye
Celulose Corp., said.

Long explained that the
council executive board administers the Scouting program in
Memphis area, and the council's
8 districts are responsible for
carrying out the program. "But
the action is in the unit and in the
organization that is chartered to
use the program," he said.
The Chickasaw Council,
which is financed by United
Ways and the council sustaining
membership enrollment, offers
program, field, office, and
national services.
Program features for unit
leaders during the coming year
will include monthly program
meetings called roundtables,

camporees , summer camp,
training, direct service to units,
Explorer Road rally & Olympics.
The local council is a
member agency of S.lJ.N. The
sustaining membership enrollment is conducted among

members, parents, and friends of
Scouting.
"When we set up our am.ual
program and calendar and build
our operating budget," Long
said, "we consider all of our over
four hundred packs, troops, and

posts. We are always searching
for new ways that we can
improve our assistance and
support to these units."
"Meet ,Joe Long Night" will
be held in all districts.

A Salute To United Way Leader s
As a member agency of
Shelby United Neighbors, we are
proud of the men and women in
the Chicksaw Council who
·devote time to the S.U.N.
campaign.
The Chickasaw Council is a
member agency of Shelby United
Neighbors.

Scouting was one of the early

annual business meeting. at
'which we will elect our 1980 slate
of officers. All Scouting
coordinators and members-atlarge are urged to be present at
this meeting to cast their votes.
Let me reemphasize the
importance of this meeting. The
strength of ouf district starts
with the strength of our district
committee. In the past we have
had e~ceptional committees
composed of outstanding
individuals. Let's make this an
incentive to elect a committee
that will strive to be the best yet!
DISTRICT CAMPOREE
Our fall camporee was a big
success. Despite the chilly
weather, Troop 45 drove home
with the totem pole. Congratulations go to Troop 303 for the
winning campsite. Our appreciation award this year goes to
Jerry Turner and his committee

great camporee.

GREAT TRAINING - THANKS
To all those who helped North Central and Scout Central withthe
Cub Leaders Training in October, I would like to express my sincere
appreciation. The time and effort will help many leaders provide a
much better program for the boys in their dens.
A speeial thanks to Cubmaster Clarence E. Farwell; Den Leaders
Dianne Barnes Johnson, Shirley Reed, and Mary Askew.
SCHOOL NIGHT A SUCCESS
Thanks to all the leaders in Packs and Troops in the North Central
District. WE did a tremendous job in School Nights. A special thanks
to leaders that went to more than one school. We would like to "Tip Our
Hat" to Joe Poindexter, Troop 100, Vernall Smith, Troop 127, also
Clarence Farwell and Shirley Reed of Pack 186. We also have a new
leader that got involved in helping with more than one sch_ool Scoutmaster George Jackson of Stephens Baptist Church.
Let's not forget that advancement is one of the methods Scouting
uses to help a boy grow. It presents him with progressively tougher
.challenges to do something. The "Some-things" are all designed to
help him become the best kind of man.

Where Does All The Money Go?
Several of us - a ll active in
Scouting· were having lunch the
other day, and we began talking
about what we had done as
Scouts and about the experiences
our sons were having.
"I remember the first time I
went to Scout camp," one man
said, "My folks made me earn
half of the camp fee, and wh en
our Scout troop got to camp, it
was the greatest thing I'd ever
done. In fact that's where I
learned to swim.
"But r never realized that the
camp staff was paid by the
council." he continued, "and it
was several years later when I
was on the staff that I
understood how much work had
to be done to get camp ready for
surhmer."
A second man said, "I never

Applications for the Award
are available from the Chickasaw
Council Service Center.
man in Scout uniform came to
our school to see how many boys
wanted to be Scouts, I couldn't
wait for a troop to be organized.
Then, when we had our first
meeting, we had the greatest
Scoutmaster who said if we were
going to be Scouts, we'd be doing
a lot of hiking and camping. In
fact, every summer we'd go
hiking for a week, and, of course,
we took part in camporees and
the council's Scouting show. I
learned so much in those daysthings
I've been able to use ever
since."
" Well, I was a father with an
8-year-old son when I started in
Scouting," a third man explained.
First, I was on the pack
committee, but in a few months I
was asked to be Cubmaster, I
didn't know much about Cub
Scouting, and if it hadn't been for
the training sessions and the
Cub Scout Leader roundtables
that the council offered, I
probably would never had made
it. Every once in a while, there'd
be some question, but I'd call our
pack commissioner or the council
service center and get the
answer."
He continued , "My son? We
could see the changes that
Scouting made in his life. I think
he's a better man and father
because of his Scouting
experience. And now I have a
grandson who is a Boy Scout."
Table talk? Of course,
Scouters like to talk about
Scouting when they're together.
And it's this devotion to Scouting
that makes it possible to have
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and
Explorers.
Behind the scenes for all
three of these men was a local
Scouting council that provided
services to the organizations that
. use the Scouting program, to the
volunteers who administer our
packs, troops, and posts, and for
, boys and young men and women
who benefit from the activities of
Scouting.
To provide those services,
the Chickasaw Co.uncil conducts
a sustaining membership enrollment
each year beca use United
Way provides only 40 percent of
the council operating budget.
Scouting is possible for young
people in our area because our
volunteer adults, parents, and
friends of Scouting become
sustaining members. ·

Scouting Services Described To Unit Leaders
''Meet Joe Long Night''
Four types of services to
leaders of Cub Scout packs. Boy
Scout troops and Explorer posts
will be described at a series of
meetings during the next month.
Bob Cannon, president of the
Chickasaw Council, will attend
the meetings along with Joe
Long, the new Chickasaw
Council Scout executive. They
also will look for suggestions to
improve the service given by the
Council.
"The job of the Chickasaw
Council is to support our unit
leaders, and we want to discuss

A Salute To United Way Leaders
As a member agency of
Shelby United Neighbors, we are
proud of the men and women in
the Chicksaw Council who
·devote time to the S.U.N.
campaign.
The Chickasaw Council is a
member agency of Shelby United
Neighbors.
Scouting was one of the early
supporters of Shelby United
Neighbors and has always been
in the forefront in providing
people for key positions.
All BSA leaders are
encouraged to assist with the
S.U.N. campaign since the
council receives approximately
40 percent of its 9peration budget
through this cooperative effort.
The balance of the council
budget comes from the
sustaining membership enrollment
among members, parents,
and friends of Scouting, which is
conducted in the spring of each
year .
