Seventh Annual Learning for Life Jamboree A Success!!
More than 1,000 special education children from Shelby County
participated in the seventh annual Special Needs Jamboree sponsored
by Learnin g for life , a divi s io n of the Boy Scouts of Ameri ca
Chickasaw Council.
The jamboree was held at Shelby Farms Showplace Arena on October 8 from 10 AM to I PM. The event was designed to give mentally
and physically challenged children a chance to participate in a num ber
of outdoor activities.
The one day jamboree fea tured a variety of outdoor activities which
offered the youngsters an opportunity to experience Scouting. The children got to shoot a bow and arrow, pitch a tent, and even use spin casting gear. There was also a petting zoo and canoe ride.
"It was a spec ial day for these children ," said Ken Robbin s, chairm an
of the event. "For man y of them , this is their onl y opportunity to participate in these types of acti vi ti es."
The children visited a variety of different booths, where they participated in activities such as arc hery, tent pitching and a petting zoo.
The youngsters also had the opportunity to navigate a "river" donated by Memphis Pool Supply. The "river" is a 100 foot long, 8 foo t
wide, 18 inch deep above ground pool in which the youth canoed.
Learning fo r Life, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, provides
in-school li fe skill s curricula that enhance self-confidence motivation ,
and self-esteem. The organization currently serves more than 4,200 MidSouth school children. In addition to the special needs program , Learning for Life operates elementary, junior high, and hi gh school programs.

the Hollywood Office, and Roundtable. Please
make every effort to get the recharter in ad va nce
