CHICKASAW COUNCIL
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, INC.
Member of The Memphis Community Fund
Chickasaw Council was organized in March 1916 with the late Mr.
Bolton Smith as its first President. During these past 30 years thousands
of boys have had the fun and training which the Scouting Program of
activities, camping, games, health and safety, civic service, etc. affords.
This Program of character building and citizenship training could not
have been accomplished without the hundreds of volunteer leaders who
have given so f~eely of their time and effort in serving these Scouts and
Cub Scouts. These leaders are due the credit for guiding these boys in
their formative years and helping them to become men of character
trained for participating citizenship. We greatly appreciate the work of
these leaders and commend them for their loyal devotion to the betterment of the youth of our area.

CHICKASAW COUNCIL
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, INC.
Member of The Memphis Community Fund
This, the Second Annual Boy Scout Circus, is a demonstration to
the public of some of the activities in which Scouts and Cub Scouts en- .
gage. But this Circus is more than a demonstration, for it affords a lot
of fun and real training to the boys-it gives them an opportunity to show
to you, their friends, what they can do.

In these days of uncertainty and unrest our youth needs the benefit
of every stabilizing program, activity and influence which can be brought
to bear on its problems. Scouting helps solve some of these problems,
for it is designed to supplement the training afforded by the home, the
church and the school.

To you P.arents and friends of Scouting we extend a cordial greeting
and welcome to this, the Second Annual Boy Scout Circus.
These Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Senior Scouts and their Leaders have
co-operated to present here a brief picture of a few of the .fundamentals
of the Movement. The skills and activities that you see here are essentially those practiced in the Troop meeting place.
Through this Circus we hope you have become more thoroughly
acqµainted with the things that make Scouting hold its place in the
hearts of the boys.
Thank you for your interest and attendance.

FACTS ABOUT CHICKASAW COUNCIL
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
The area of Chickasaw Council comprises DeSoto, Tate, Panola Counties in
Mississippi; the eastern hall of Crittenden Connty, Arkansas; Shelby County,
Tennessee. The Council Headquarters is located in the Columhian Mutual Tower,
Memphis.

In this area there are the following:

Troops ---------Troops --------Packs -------------Packs ___________ :_____

Including the Scoutmasters, Cuhmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Assistant
Cuhmasters, Den Mothers, District and Neighborhood Commissioners Merit
Badge Counselors, Council Members there are 1,288 leaders. These 1,288 leaders
plus the 4,572 Scouts and Cubs makes a grand total of 5,860 people who are
connected with Chickasaw Council.
That these Leaders serve the Nation in war as well as in peace is shown by
the fact that 43 of them were decorated by the United States Government for
bravery in action against the. enemy during the last War.

The Conncil has three camps, Camp Currier, Kamp Kia Kima and Camp
Daniels.
·
Camp Currier, near Eudora, Miss. has 340 acres ·of rugged woodland on
whiCh there are 37 Troop cabins, a 15 acre lake for boating and fishing, one of
the best swimming pools in the South, Headquarters Building, Mitchel H.
Rosenthal Health Lodge, Mess HalJ and other buildings. It is open the year
round and is recognized as one of the best Scout camps.

Kamp Kia Kima, near Hardy, Ark. is located on 155 acres wbich are divided
by the South Fork of Spring River. The camp is not being operated at present
but it is hoped that equipment will be available in the near future which will
make it possible to open this camp. Lack of man-power has been the chief
cause for not operating this camp in the past few years and this difficulty is
rapidly being overcome.
Camp Daniels for Negro Scouts is located in Douglas Park just outside of
the City Limits of Memphis. It is a splendid camp with 15 buildings on an
excellent camp-site and is used the year-round.
Any profits which accrue from the Boy Scout Circus will be used to improve
and develop the camping facilities of the Council. The National Council has
recently surveyed the camp properties of Chickasaw Council and a Five-Year
Plan of development is now being worked out. When completed this plan will be
financed largely through the proceeds received from the annual Boy Scout
Circuses. ·

Charles Rittelmeyer, Event Director
Sc.outs are taught to "Learn by Doing." This event will show many of the skills
which Scouts learn in their Troop meetings and at camp. The fnn increases as the Scout's
skill grows. "Safety Through Skill" is not an empty phrase in Scouting, for the boys are given
plenty of opportunities to practice skills which help to make them self-reliant.

To build towers and bridges with only rope, saplings and skill is a good stunt if
you can do it. These Scouts are learning how to lash poles together into useful objects; they
are learning by doing. The construction of these towers and bridges offers adventurous and
vigorous out~door activity and a lot of fun to t'he boys who master the principles used.

THE AMERICAN'S CREED
Wm. Tyler Page
I believe in the United States of America as a govermnent of the people,
by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent
of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many
sovereign states; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those
principles of freedom, e·quality, justice and humanity, for which American
patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its
constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its Flag, and to defend it against

all enemies.

We greatly appreciate the work of
these leaders and commend them for their loyal devotion to the betterment
of the youth of our area.

Scouting helps solve some of these problems,
for it is designed to supplement the training afforded by the home, the
church and the school.

the fact that 43 of them were decorated by the United States Government for

Circuses. ·
