FOUNDED in 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1916, the Boy Scouts
of America aims " 'to promote, through organization, and cooperation
with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and
others, to train them 'in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage,
self-reliance, and kindred virtues ... ' placing emphasis upon the Scout Oath
or Promise and Law for character development, citizenship training, and
physical fitness."
Scouting's active registered membership approximates 5,230,000 and consists of Cub Scouts, age eight through ten; Boy Scouts, eleven through
seventeen; Explorers, over fourteen; and adult leaders. All of the 1,300,000
adults are volunteers except the 3, 700 career men commissioned as Scout
executives. The 130,000 Scout units are chartered and operated through
church or synagogue, school, civic, and community organizations.
Covering the country are 530 local councils. These councils have organized
2,800 district committees to help carry out the program. The cost of administering the program of these councils and furnishing professional
guidance is provided through contributions in each community. The money
for the program needs of the Scouts and units is largely earned by the boys
themse!v:es as a part of the Scouting program.
Scout advancement for the boy runs along two main trails: One leads to
varied group events in such areas as conservation, camping, and community
service-which boys operate and adults guide. 'fhe other is marked by more
than 100 individual electives and projects like gardening, safety, bird lore,
and home repairs. To develop skills needed for these merit badges and to
judge achievement, parents and merit badge counselors cooperate and play
major teaching roles. Good Turns, community service, mastery of important
skills, and personal acceptance and practice of Scouting ideals also mark the
progress of a Scout.
To date Scouting has registered nearly
33,000,000 members. Sons of rich and
poor; Catholics, Jews, and Protestants;
boys from country, city, and every race have
worn the Scout uniform and taken the
promise: "On my honor I will do my
best-."
The Boy Scouts of America joins with
Scout associations in over seventy nations
•t6 promote world brotherhood and good
will.

A PROGRAM or
NATIONAL PURPOSE

Since the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in
1910, millions of American men and women have joined
in helping to fulfill its purposes and, in so doing, have
built a movement which is a vital part of American lifo.
Scouting's role in strengthening America was never
more important than it is right now! The first line of our
nation's defense lies in the character of its people and
that of the oncoming generation.
This is the reason for our slogan "Strengthen America
.. . Character Counts." In its fulfillment. the movement
calls for us to do our best to build, to serve, and to
achieve, so that working together we may:

BUILD a strong America-by building and maintaining a strong movement, capable of leading the
largest possible number of boys along the trail
to good character, participating citizenship, and
physical fitness.

SERVE the cause of democracy-by giving boys the
opportunity to practice good citizenship through
service to their fellow man and by helping them
expand their knowledge and love of their country.

ACHIEVE the purposes of Scouting-by helping boys
to do things for themselves and others and to instill within their hearts and minds the ideals of
Scouting based on a reverence for God.

CHICKA~W COU~CIL

Chickasaw Council is made up of representatives from every institution chartered to
use the Scouting program and additional
leading citizens in the council area who
are keenly interested in Scouting and its
development.
The council provides services to institutions and leaders to make their program
more eff~ctive. Among those services are
camp facilities, training
opportunities,
advancement procedures, extension program,
connnissioner service, office service station, and a trained staff of professional
Scouters. These services are provided by
an operating budget. Citizens living in
the council make this operating budget
possible through their support of Shelby
United Neighbors, Sustaining Membership enrollment, and a council finance campaign in
some districts.
The council serves Shelby County in Tennessee; DeSoto, Tate and Panola Counties in
Mississippi, and part of Crittenden County
in Arkansas. The council has an enrollment
of approximately 14,500 boys and leaders in
over 400 Scouting units.

1 / (p ,
FOUNDED in 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1916, the Boy Scouts
of America aims " 'to promote, through organization, and cooperation
with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and
others, to train them 'in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage,
self-reliance, and kindred virtues ... ' placing emphasis upon the Scout Oath
or Promise and Law for character development, citizenship training, and
physical fitness."
Scouting's active registered membership approximates 5,230,000 and consists
of Cub Scouts, age eight through ten; Boy Scouts, eleven through
seventeen; Explorers, over fourteen; and adult leaders.
The cost of administering
the program of these councils and furnishing professional
guidance is provided through contributions in each community. The money
for the program needs of the Scouts and units is largely earned by the boys
themse!v:es as a part of the Scouting program.
Sons of rich and
poor; Catholics, Jews, and Protestants;
boys from country, city, and every race have
worn the Scout uniform and taken the
promise: "On my honor I will do my
best-."

Scout associations in over seventy nations

BUILD a strong America-by building and maintaining
a strong movement, capable of leading the
largest possible number of boys along the trail
to good character, participating citizenship, and
physical fitness.
SERVE the cause of democracy-by giving boys the
opportunity to practice good citizenship through
service to their fellow man and by helping them
expand their knowledge and love of their country.
ACHIEVE the purposes of Scouting-by helping boys
to do things for themselves and others and to instill
within their hearts and minds the ideals of
Scouting based on a reverence for God.
FACTS ABOUT CHICKA~W COU~CIL
Chickasaw Council is made up of representatives
from every institution chartered to
use the Scouting program and additional
leading citizens in the council area who
are keenly interested in Scouting and its
development.
The council provides services to institutions
and leaders to make their program
more eff~ctive. Among those services are
camp facilities, training opportunities,
advancement procedures, extension program,
connnissioner service, office service station,
and a trained staff of professional
Scouters. These services are provided by
an operating budget. Citizens living in
the council make this operating budget
possible through their support of Shelby
United Neighbors, Sustaining Membership enrollment,
and a council finance campaign in
some districts.
The council serves Shelby County in Tennessee;
DeSoto, Tate and Panola Counties in
Mississippi, and part of Crittenden County
in Arkansas. The council has an enrollment
of approximately 14,500 boys and leaders in
over 400 Scouting units.
