The Order o the Arrow emphasizes that a good Scout
camper is not only proficient in
the skills of Scoutcra ft but also
practices the principles of Scouting expressed in the Scout Oath
and Law and in the tradition of
the Good Tum. Particula r atten1 tion is paid to cheerful service as
J , an essential to a happy camping
I experience. True brotherh ood exists among those who exhibit these
traits in their daily lives.
The Order as you can see from
the statemen t of purpose is not a
program or a thing apart from
Scouting.
It is a evice used in the camp1 ing program of the Boy Scouts o
America.
It has its roots in the troop and
. . post that goes camping.
It gathers those designated by
troops or posts as members of the
..· ~~ int9 ·a local counc · gro~p
. ~ , a~gc.

·

The Order of the Arrow is a
thing ofthe individual rather than
· qf the mass.
It is natural that the program
and setting of Scout camping
should lead to the formation of
campers honor societies. In the
early years of Scouting in America many such organizations were
formed. The success of the Order
of the Arrow iii_its early- expan-sion years was due in large ·
measure to the democrat ic basis
for the selection of candidate s;
the recognition of the Scout unit;
the camping requirem ent; a practical plan for service to o • ng
in which e promotio n and mproveme nt of camping, beginning
in a boy's own unit, were the
central i ea; colorf 1 c remonies;
a well-defined plan of organization; literature -coverin g ceremonies and administ ration-th t
could be easily adapted to local
councils; the practical and colorful interpret ation of the Scout
Oath and Law; the Good Turn
and the spiritual "qualitie s of
Scouting.

'Tile r er ot the Arrow is a
thing of the out-of-do ors rather
an the indoors. It was born on
n island wilderness. It needs the
sun and the rain, the woods and
the plains, the waters and the
rli s y.

or o
of Iffe! n the open
comes a precious ingredient whic
our country and any country needs
· if it is to survive- self-reliance that

UNIT LEADERS SUMMER CAMP GUIDE BOOK

The enclosed information is to replace pages 13, 14, 15 and 16 of your Kia Kima
Unit Leader Guidebook for 1982. These additions and changes reflect some recent
decisions of your Grass Roots Camping Committee and should be used when planning
the schedule f or your Scouts.
Also, we take this opportunity to inform you that the May 1 deadline for the
$20.00 per Scout and leader camp registr ation fee has been extended to May 15.
All those registered by May 15 with the $20.00 fee will receive a free camp
T-shirt.
Here's a chance to save money on your troop camping fee for your troop! Does
your troop have a man that will be attending Kia Kima and would be willing to
serve camp as a Troop Commissioner? If so, he can attend camp free. He would
remain with your troop throughout the week, but during the day would help teach
Tenderfoot, Second and First Class Skills in the First Year Camper Area. He
would also conduct troop campsite inspections. We can use four such men each
week this st.nnmer. Interested? Contact Tom Moore or Claud Brown at the Scout
Office - 327-4193.
