The Kia Kima;Story
Kia Kirna traces its history to the very early days of the Chickasaw Council. In 1916,
Bolton Smith, the first president of the Chickasaw Council, donated the original Kia
Kima site. Bolton Smith went on to serve as vice president of the Boy Scouts of America
and to receive the Silver Buffalo award.
The original Kia Kima site stood high on.the bluffs overlooking the South Fork River
near Hardy, Arkansas. Through the years, this area of Arkansas in the foothills of the
Ozarks has become a center of camping and outdoor activities. One of the first camps in
the area, Kia Kima was instrumental in the development of north central Arkansas. The
Hardy area was a logical choice for a summer camp. Many Memphis area families had
vacation homes there where they traveled to escape the oppressive summer heat in the
city. Hardy was a short four hour train ride from Memphis on the Frisco line. Old timers
recall the train stop in Hoxie where you could buy a hot tamale.
In the early days, there was no bridge across the river, so the Scouts were met by the staff
·at the Hardy train station. The staff loaded the gear on wagons pulled by mules and the
Scouts hiked to the river and were ferried across to the camp.
In the early days, the highest honor a camper could receive was to be chosen by his
fellows as a Council Scout. Those chosen were led to a secret council fire d~ep in the
woods and given an Indian name.
In 1948, the Chickasaw Council adopted the Order of the Arrow as a part of its camping
program. Chickasaw Lodge of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kirna and held
its first call out and Ordeal there that year. The Order of the Arrow, which traces its
beginnings to Treasure Island, Philadelphia's Scout camp, replaced the earlier Council
Scouts. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's Brotherhood of Honor Campers, has played
a key role at Kia Kima ever since.
By the early 1960s Kia Kima had outgrown its original location. In 1963, West Memphis
businessman John Cooper, who was devel9ping the Cherokee Village community near
Hardy, approached the Executive Board with,a proposal to exchange a 540-acre tract a
few miles away on the edge of Cherokee Village for the 160 acres of old Kia Kima. The
offer was accepted and work began immediately on the new Kia Kirna. The new camp
was ready for its first season in 1964.
The new camp was what we call Camp Osage today. A second camp, Camp Cherokee,
was opened in 1965.
Kia Kirna has continued to grow and prosper over the years, with the addition of many
new facilities like Project COPE and the majestic Golightly All Faiths Chapel
overlooking the reservation.

Kia Kiina has had a rich history for its 77 years. It has seen visionaries like Bolton Smith
and John Cooper, who make Kia Kima possible, along with many others who have
supported it financially and with their personal efforts. It has grown through the devotion
of the well over one thousand people who have served on its staff. Approximately one
hundred thousand Scouts, along with thousands of leaders, have had a summer camp
experience at Kia Kima in the laboratory of Scouting ---- the great outdoors.

fireguard plan furnished by the Camp. The Camp Ranger serves as the camp fire warden.

ln the early years, Scouts would ride the train from Memphis to Hardy and
then hike the remaining distance to Kamp Kia Kima while horse drawn wagons would carry in the gear. The Scouts would be assigned to tribes and stay
in lodges. Eventually, the camp expanded to include many stone cabins, a
hospital, dining hall and Thunderbird Lodge.
ln 1940, Kia Kima closed due to World War ll and the rationing of gas. lt would
not reopen until 1948. lt was in 1948 that the first Chickasaw Council Ordeal
was held at Kamp Kia Kima. The ceremonial team from lttawamba Lodge
#235 came and inducted about thirty scouts and scouters who became the
lodge's charter members. lt was not until 1949 that the charter was issued for
Chickasah Lodge #406.

ln 1963, the developer of nearby Cherokee Village proposed a trade to the
Chickasaw Council. ln exchange for the original Kamp Kia Kia site he would
give the council a tract of land further up the river totalling 860 acres along
with several construction projects to get things rolling. ln 1964 Kia Kima Scout
Reservation opened at our current location.

After nearly 40 years of failed development and dire neglect, the original
Kamp Kia Kima was restored by former Scout campers and operates as a
campground and museum open to all.

Welcome to the 2c^16 Section 6 Conclave and the Kia Kima Scout Reservation
(KKSR). lt is an honor and privilege to have our lodge, Ahoalan-Nachpikin,
acting as the service lodge and to serve you this weekend in the year of the
'lOOth anniversary of KKSR.
During the past lOO years, Kia Kima has evolved both geographically and
programmatically. The most recent addition is our new dining hall with its enhanced
cooking and eating facilities, climbing walls, stage areas and spacious
porch where our Scouts and Scouters relax and share ideas.
KKSR is developed into two camps. This weekend you are staying at Camp
Osage (originally the main camp and the larger of the two) with 15 unique
campsites and exceptional camp programs. The Camp Osage waterfront is
also home to all our aquatic activities held along the banks of the South Fork
River. Camp Cherokee, originally an outpost camp across the river, has its own
unique offerings while still providing the same great traditional programs, but
in a smaller camp setting.
Our lodge's history is one of coming together for the common good and for
service.
ln 1994, a joint Fall Fellowship event was held with the Koi Hatachie (3a5)
and Chickasah (406) lodges at Camp Tallaha located outside Charleston, MS.
Elections were held to select the new Lodge Executive Council (LEC).
As the Chickasaw and Delta councils were in the process of merging at this
time, it was agreed to have a balanced representation of leadership from the
two merged lodges. After an Arrowman from Chickasah was elected Lodge
Chief, nominations were then limited to members of Koi Hatchie for lst Vice
Chief. All the other offices were open to Arrowmen from either lodge. Only
the position of 2nd Vice Chief ran opposed.
Later, the newly elected lodge officers met at the Chickasaw Council office
to determine the new lodge totem and name. After several attempts, they
selected the black bear and the name Ahoalan-Nachpikin (558), which means
"We Who Love the Outdoors."
ln January 1,1997 our lodge joined Section SR-6-N, then SR-6 in 2OO9 where
it is remains today.
While this is our history, you will be adding to our legacy this weekend as you
